15 TOURISM AND TRAVEL THE BEST IN LIECHTENSTEIN
The trip to Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein is a small, beautiful country with a lot to offer. Located in central Europe, nestled between Switzerland and Austria, the landlocked country covers only 62 square miles but every inch is spectacular. Incredible Alpine mountains, a moderate climate, plenty of history, and countless attractions make Liechtenstein a must-see travel destination. Here are 15 things to do in Liechtenstein that will make it a trip to remember.
1. Ski Region Malbun
The Alpine mountains and relatively moderate climate make Liechtenstein a well-loved destination for skiers and snowboarders. The ski region in Malbun is one of the best places to enjoy the slopes. This is also a well-loved destination for summertime adventurers with great hiking options. No matter the season or the purpose, the Sareis chairlift whisks adventurers up for panoramic views of incredible beauty in Liechtenstein as well as Austria and Switzerland. Whether skiing or hiking, it’s always a good idea to enjoy a great meal on the large restaurant terrace on the top of the mountain. It’s a great place for soaking in the fresh mountain air and taking the time to be grateful for all the things to do in Liechtenstein that you’ve gotten to experience. Enjoying the ski region in Malbun is a great way to cap off your trip to this beautiful country.
2. Vaduz Castle
Of the five castles in Liechtenstein, Vaduz Castle is probably the most well-known. It can be seen from a great distance, and is a symbol of the capital city of Vaduz. The castle’s origins date back to being a fortress in the 12th century, but for much of its history, it has been the official residence of the Princely Family. The castle is not open to visitors, but just seeing it is one of the best things to do in Liechtenstein. Guided tours of Vaduz provide insights into the castle and its history.
3. Alte Rheinbrücke
Walking across this old bridge is one of the most unique things to do in Liechtenstein. It’s unique primarily because by walking across it, you can stand partly in Liechtenstein and partly in Switzerland. The old wooden bridge is not open to vehicles, so the only traffic comes from pedestrians and bicycles. The incredible views of the Rhine and the Alps are mostly obscured while walking the bridge because it is fully closed with walls and a roof. Taking a photo of the historic bridge in its gorgeous setting should be as much a part of your list as walking the bridge itself.
4. Burg Gutenberg
This majestic hilltop castle is located in Balzers and is truly a must-see. With beginning as far back as the 12th century, the castle went through many changes over the centuries until it was ultimately restored in the early 1900s. 7. Ganglesee Lake
Liechtenstein may be landlocked, but there are a few bodies of water worth seeing. Ganglesee Lake in Steg is a tranquil oasis. It’s perfect for swimming (though the water tends to be fairly cold) and enjoying a picnic. With dedicated barbecue areas, it’s an ideal spot for enjoying a meal while gazing at the mountain views. Popular with families, an afternoon at Ganglesee is a great way to both play and relax while soaking in nature.
8. St. Joseph’s Parish Church
A
beautiful old Catholic church located in Triesenberg, St. Joseph’s
Parish Church was built in the 1700s and has been well-maintained. It’s

it worth a look.
9. Russian Monument
For history buffs, one of the best places to visit in Liechtenstein is the Russian Monument in Schellenberg. It’s just a small memorial stone located near the Austrian border, but it commemorates an important moment in the history of Liechtenstein. Towards the end of the Second World War, around 500 Russian soldiers entered Liechtenstein seeking asylum. After some negotiations, Liechtenstein refused to answer Stalin’s demands and granted asylum to the soldiers. The small monument offers a place to reflect on this fraught time in history.
10. The Three Sisters (Drei Schwestern)
A three-peaked mountain range located on the border of Austria, Drei Schwestern is another not-to-be-missed mountain experience. The highest point is just under 7,000 feet, on the peak known as Big Sister. Middle Sister and Little Sister aren’t that far behind in elevation. All three peaks offer great hiking with a well-developed system of trails. There are also some mountain climbing possibilities, ranging in difficulty from relatively easy to extremely difficult.
11. Galina Falcon Center
Located in Malbun, the Galina Falcon Center offers an unforgettable look at falconry. Birds of prey are released each afternoon, and a show provides insight into the history and art of falconry. Though the show is in German, even non-speakers can enjoy the experience, just for the opportunity to see these great creatures up close. In addition to the show, there is a hike available where you get to spend time up close with a golden eagle. The Galina Falcon Center is located in a hotel and restaurant, so after experiencing the birds, you can enjoy a good meal and stay for the night in this picturesque town.
12. Shalun Castle
Beautiful mountains aren’t the only things to see in Liechtenstein; there are also the incredible castles. Schalun Castle is technically a castle ruin. Located east of capital city Vaduz, this castle hails from the 12th century. It’s open to the public, accessible by foot or bike, and it’s an experience that really takes you back into history. Only two parts of the historic building remain standing.
13. Galinakopf
This mountain that borders Austria is one of the many breathtaking Alpine mountains packed into the small space of the country. Liechtenstein sightseeing should always include time to delight in the beauty of the mountains. Galinakopf is just one of the incredible mountains. Perhaps most noteworthy is the German Enigma machine, used in the Second World War. This museum is a treat for both kids and adults.
15. Traditional Farmhouse Museum
Located in Schellenberg, this unique museum celebrates the farming heritage so much a part of life in this part of Liechtenstein. The traditional wood building was erected in 1518, and it’s worth seeing on its own, but it also houses exhibits that take you back in time and offer a window into what life was like for these early farmers. After exploring the museum, you should take some time to enjoy Schellenberg, a lowland treasure that sits on the banks of the Rhine.
